Recently I discovered a set of stickers for giving Zakus shiny mono eyes. Turns out they also make good raptor eyes. To add to the effect, I drilled a hole in the head, and put a piece of fiber optic inside, so light could shine through. Another quick and dirty mod is to use the tip of a mechanical pencil for the gun barrel in the mouth.
1-7: This is the combo I didn’t think of, but ended up being the best one.
8-14: This didn’t turn out as nice as I expected (and is a pain to photograph), but it does look good in the dark! (#14 is all glow power, no blacklight.)
This was the first limited model from the Genesis line. It glows in the dark, and kind of always has a semi glow to it in light. It also comes with a small pvc figure of Char Aznable Zairin, the Megaraptor’s pilot and sometime bad-guy of the series.
To get this guy, you had to buy each of the three Genesis DVD box sets (which each came with a clear hero liger, and cost around $300), then send the proofs of purchase off. Or wait until they hit Yahoo Japan (much cheaper!). The best part of this one (for me) is the clear pilot. I’ve wanted one of those forever! I also got some fun night/blacklight shots.
This is the limited “Commander” version of the Bio Raptor, which was easier to obtain than the regular version, and only slightly different in color (WORST LIMITED EVAR). As you can see by the comparison pics, this is a wee fella. I kind of want a whole army of them.
Before the Bio Zoids, I would have been annoyed at something that didn’t have a motor and didn’t even look like a zoid, but this was too cool to pass up. #7 was done with a laser pointer. #8-9 are of the handy display stand. Last six (added June 2006): I messed around with some new poses, finally taking advantage of Bio zoids’ flexibility. This one is based on a pose my “special lady” made, which worked out well since this guy’s legs are totally loose now. For a while he sat atop my monitor at work.
This one is bigger than I expected it to be (somewhere between Genosaurer and Gojulas Giga), but still a bit small (bio zoids always seem to be 1/100 scale, if you’re going by the anime sizes). Also, the claws were begging to be painted a shiny gold. They don’t quite match the teeth yet, but that might be ok, or at least better than the dull flat gold they were.
Bio Kentro’s another one that looks a lot better in person. The metallic green is really nice. Unfortunately, mine came with two right rear legs, so all pics are taken from his “good side”.
This was one of the uber-baddies of the anime. For having the same understructure as Bio Kentro, Tricera is a lot bulkier. The armor is so thick that it’s hard to get good leg movement. It’s not apparent from my crappy pics, but the armor actually has a brownish tint to it. Chocolate Hell Armor™, people!
I was interested in Bio Ptera since it came out (clear blue!), but didn’t want to pay $20 (plus shipping!) for such a tiny model. Enter ebay user akitoys, with their $6.50 buy it now. Last four pics show the display stand I stole from a Marvel Legends figure, because it allows for much better flight poses.
Finally got me mitts on one of these guys. My only beef is the lack of clear eye pieces. They went the lazy route and just painted them.
This was Char Aznable’s Zairin’s mid-season upgrade. It has the same frame as Bio Megs, but the armor is a lot thicker, so it looks beefier and three times more intimidating. All the “crystal shards” don’t hurt either. I can almost never get this guy posed without the assistance of the display stand.
