043 Spinosnapper (Holotech)

For the longest time I’d been sitting on a MIB one of these, but recently I stole its wonderful clear saws, for a custom weapon for Hammer Rock. Then, someone on Pheno’s forum was selling a built one for dirt cheap. Hooray!

Also: Orange! Transparent! Chainsaws!

1981: Mechatoros

The Mechabonica (“mechanical bones”) line was launched in 1981 as a “test balloon”. They didn’t do so well, so they got shipped off to America, as the OAR many of us old farts grew up with. In 1983, Tomy tried again, and I think you know the rest of the story.

Through some miracle I managed to find an MIB Mechatoros on Yahoo Japan, and I didn’t even have to give up any organs for it! No way in hell I’m opening this one. See OAR bird for a built one.

2006: Zenevas Memorial Box 1984

MIB for now and (probably) ever. A sequel to this box set would have been nice, but instead we got the Monthly Zoids Graphics series. If you can find those, you win!

2007: Helic Memorial Box II 1983-1984

MIB for now and (probably) ever. Before this one there was a “Helic Memorial Box” with the first five whiteheads, but I never picked that one up, since I already have about a billion of each of those kits. All of these box sets were limited, and that set was a Toy’s Dream Project limited, making it like a double limited—i.e., I should have grabbed one. ANYWAY, this set has my favorite whiteheads.

Aquazoid

There were two variants of this kit, but since I never look in the box, I keep forgetting which one I have. I picked it up in a tiny shop in Seattle’s Chinatown (ahem, International) district back in 2001 and haven’t had a chance to open it since.

CP-24 Flexible Booster Unit (Limited)

For the longest time I wondered if this limited version’s grey matched the weird grey of NJR Hammer Rock. It didn’t help that there were no good pictures anywhere. Well, now I know! The answer: close, but NO. This grey is very neutral, with no weird lavender cast to it.

EZ-012 Brachios(aur)

I have one of these MIB, if anyone’s interested. Fun fact: this almost always shows up on ebay listings as “Grachiosaur”. Hasbro font fail!

EZ-044 Zabat

I decided to use some of my fire sale profits to restore my NJR Zabat that gave up its life in a parts swap. This one is from Academy, which released Zoids in Korea. (The kit’s colors are identical to the NJR, and so is the packaging—except for Korean text instead of Japanese.)

EZ-047 Maccurtis

MIB for now. I built one a long time ago, but ended up breaking one of the legs trying to take it out of the socket (this is very easy to do), so I’m not in much of a hurry to build this one.

EZ-063 Guntiger

Just making this post to show that I have two of these MIB, if anyone’s interested. I think they were the Pacific release, because they have a Tomy logo instead of Hasbro, and there is a sticker with Chinese writing on the back.

GB-005 Bio Ptera

I was interested in Bio Ptera since it came out (clear blue!), but didn’t want to pay $20 (plus shipping!) for such a tiny model. Enter ebay user akitoys, with their $6.50 buy it now. Last four pics show the display stand I stole from a Marvel Legends figure, because it allows for much better flight poses.

GZ-006 Zabat

Zabat was originally introduced in the NJR, but the colors didn’t grab me like these do. Zabat’s not motorized, but there’s a fussy button you can press to flap the wings, and there is a cruise missile with a pullback motor to deploy. There are two different heads you can use: one that is more bat-like, for automated drone mode, and one that can fit a pilot, which I prefer. There is also a handy stand for hanging upside down when not in use. (Take the pilot out first, for his sake!)

HMM CP-11 (for Shield Liger)

HMM clear parts? OH MY! This was a festival limited, like all the other HMM CP sets, but the first to feature clear parts (most have been chromed).

PT-05 Dontress (Wave)

This one’s mostly MIB—my OJR version is borrowing a couple pieces right now. Priorities, you know. They’re identical, except for the clear parts (orange here) and caps (grey here).

RZ-052 Gunbluster

MIB for now. The OJR version has chrome guns and a cooler color scheme, but also costs ten times as much, so I’ll stick with this one. Bummer that neither version had clear eyes.

RZ-067 Arosaurer

MIB for now. For some reason, this one’s box art (like the box art for Gorhecks) shows an opaque canopy. This filled my heart with fear when they came out, but rest assured the canopy inside the box is clear.

Vol. 08 Puterasu

So far, this one’s staying MIB until I can make more shelf room. I did take out the bonus “present” for this set, though. It’s the other sprue from Remodel Set No. 1!
